Our Focus Group

Our focus group went very well on Monday. The feedback we got was mainly positive. The group said they could get an overall feel and look of the video, artist etc. Howeer, they were confused about our idea of having the DJ as a male when Bethany (our main performer) was quite central compared to the male DJ we had chosen and this confused the group. When we handed out our Digipak, Bethany was a main focus so the focus group didn't understand what the make DJ has to do with the album.

Today we made the desicion that Bethany was going to become our female DJ as it was more obvious and we could do more with this idea.

Another critism that we are now working on was the lay out of our website. It wasn't very well formatted so we are cleaning that now so it's more easier to read and nice to look at. The overall look and themes of the website came across well, which was a positive aspect to the website.

Here were some key points we picked out from the video from a voice recording we had also used as the sound quality in the visual video isn't very clear:

·        “I like the inside with just her eyes.” – Digipak 4:14

·        “the image tripled is really nice” – Digipak  4:29

·        “I like the black and white” – Digipak 4:47

·         “The colours and layout make me think of that type of music” “What type of music?” “Dubstep.” – Digipak 6:54

·        “Is that the album cover, or is that the single cover?” – Digipak 8:26 – raised a good question that we had to think about in order to make our digipak applicable for the entire album.

·        “The way her face is decorated , you wouldn’t see her perform like that” – Website (about the question of female or male DJ) 8:56

·        “I think all three are very well linked.” – 12:29

·        “Because the video is a projection on a tree, it doesn’t make her feel real. So the fact that she is the representative, and not the actual artist, links the whole three together really well.” – Video, links to how it is a male DJ (she is just an image/projection of the artist) 12:42

·        “Maybe put a photo of the actual DJ, like a photoshoot photo next to the video or something to make it really clear.” – Video 14:22

·        “You can even put the DJ in a forest, in the picture, to show the link.” – Video 14:31

·        “The colours with the eyes used there reflect the colours in the video, so maybe you can use them in the website or the digipak.” – The photos of Bethany with eyes painted on her eyes  14:33

·        “I really like the outside of the digipak, and the eyes in the inside are nice but you could show the video colour” – Digipak (maybe use colour on the inside of the digipak and black and white on the outside?) 14:52

What is a Focus Group?

A focus group is to get as much information about what people think about your product you've produced. This is achieved by listening within the group, not talking and taking lots of notes.

The point of a focus group is not to sell your product to the group but to get feedback on it, so that you can make it better and this is all dependant on the response you get from the group. If you go into a focus group with the intention of just selling your product by asking not very broad questions and highlighting things you like about it, the focus group will struggle to give negative or helpful feedback, therefore you will not be able to improve. You musn't interrupt your group nor defend the product - also don't explain, let your audience say how they feel. As the person holding the focus group, you must take on every critism or suggestions, not ignore them just because it's not what you want to hear.

Questions asked within the group shouldn't be limited or yes/no questions, they should be open and simple for the group.

The new information is to help improve the effectiveness of your product and make it more appealing to an audience. The best opinions you're going to get is from your focus group because this is an audience you want to sell your product to.

Evaluation of Shoot Day

Our Shoot Day

Tuesday was so successful. I was very excited when I woke up that morning. I felt as though I was prepared as the night before I had set up Bethany's costume along with lots of make up. We worked 9am - 6pm...

From 9am - 10:30 am we worked on the girls/dancers make up... We were hoping that we would've been done with make up after 30 minutes - 45 minutes, but it took a lot longer than this. We copied 'tribal make up' pictures for inspiration, and this is what I came out with:

Once we had finished make up we set up the dancers in the studio and filmed all their dance choreographed bits. We finished this about 12:30 pm and had lunch. After lunch we used the dancers for a short amount of time again where we used them crawling up to Max, who was the vulnerable boy/the prey to the girls...

We then called in Bethany to do her lip syncing with small movement, and then after this we followed up with Ezra lip syncing. This took us up till about 4 pm.

We then had to wait for our final cast, the two boys and Max to film Max being chased by the two boys. This took from about 5 pm through till 6 pm.

We luckily managed to film everything we wanted. One slip up we had was that our skirts, for the dancers, didn't deliver to us in time, therefore we had to find a back-up pretty quickly... these are the dresses we ended up using and they worked really well.

I think what was really hard about the day was just getting control of when we needed who. Because one of our actors was a teacher, his schedule changed therefore we had to mix the shoot day up. We really had to get on top of who we needed when etc.

Rough cut of our Idea of Digipak

One of my group members, Liv, managed to start editing some of the photos that we took for our animatic and test shots to see if we could start creating a look for our Digipak to get some ideas... and this is what they ended up like:

We then put all the photos together to create a 4 panel Digipak and this is what our rough idea has come out like:

Research of Homepages in correct genre

Here are some DJ Websites that my group came across for inspiration:

You can see there is a clear pattern shown that all the websites have the artists name in a bold font, central or left at the top of the page. They have fairly simple layouts which are easy to use.
