Evaluation of 'Drunk in Love - Beyonce'

The genre of this song is a crossover of 'Pop/R&B/Soul'. The star image in this video is Beyoncé, who is shown as seductive and 'goddess' like. The outfit she wears highlights her figure and allows us to see her movement in the video.

For a lot of the song, we don't see her lip singing, the track plays on top and we see a lot of slow motion of her 'body rolling' movements which is very sexual and seductive. It plays with the idea of her being on a beach so we see a lot of Beyoncé dancing in the water, and we see her repeatedly touching herself in a sensual manner. Because Beyoncé is so well-known and recognisable, the video can get away and work with having Beyoncé on the screen on herself for most of the song.

We then see Jay-Z (her husband) come into the video who features in the song. We know them as a couple, and it demonstrates this in the video. We see Beyoncé holding onto Jay-Z and singing to him, again in a very sensual manner.

The video uses smoke which gives an effect to Beyoncé dancing. It reflects the idea of her being sexual and that in the moment the situation is 'steamy', 'intense' and 'hot'.

Evaluation of 'Suit & Tie - Justin Timberlake'

The genre for this song is 'R&B'. The music video uses Justin Timberlake as the star performer in this. He wears 'a suit & tie' which helps to reflect the title of the song. He is shown as very clean cut and he is the main performer during this video.

The video is trying to resemble the time period of the 60's due to the costume, the particular microphone, the fact it is in black and white and the style of dancing. The whole look of the video is very clean cut and smart. The setting for the video shows a 60's styled club, it has a stage and in the audience and we see a bar with people sitting round small tables and having drinks. A lot of the males are shown smoking cigars.

We then see Jay-Z as he features in the song as the rapper. At this point we see a lot of female dancers who are wearing garters attached to sexy lingerie which is very revealing. The overall star image of Justin Timberlake shows him as very slick and cool, as well as Jay-Z who sits there and raps; it's very laid back but again cool.

Evaluation of 'Fancy - Iggy Azalea'

This is my first evaluation of a music video. The video focuses on the two performers/artists Iggy Azalea and Charlie XCX. The songs genre is 'Rap/Pop' crossover. The music, artists and video all appeal to a younger target audience. The intertextuality for this film uses the idea from the film 'Clueless' which came out in 1995. They replicate the idea of the two artists being in school and even wearing the same outfits as the characters in the film.

(I got these images from google and here we can see the comparison from the music video and the film itself)

However, there is no actual narrative during the video. There is the odd little dance sequence e.g Iggy Azalea dancing along the chained fence with the other girls, but the main idea for this video is to see the comparison in the film 'Clueless' and this is done using mise en scene.

'Paradox 1 and 2 in Star Image' - Richard Dyer

Starting A2...

Finally... I am starting my A2 course this week! I took the AS media exam last week and I am feeling pretty confident on how it went overall! Thank you examiners for another year of screening a Downton Abbey clip (my fave T.V programme)

We are now moving on from the film industry (AS), to now starting the music industry... this should be fun.
